About the Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Air Pollution Control Program Manager, the Air Pollution Control Specialist I/II conducts routine inspections, investigations and evaluations of existing and potential sources of air contaminants in industrial, commercial and residential establishments for the purpose of detection, prevention, abatement and control of air pollution in accordance with applicable laws, rules and regulations. Performs related professional work as required.

(A-E Steps)

Air Pollution Control Specialist I:

$27.43 – $33.35 Hourly / $2,194.40- $2,668.00 Biweekly / $57,054.40 – $69,368.00 Annually

Air Pollution Control Specialist II:

$30.28 – $36.81 Hourly / $2,422.40 – $2,944.80 Biweekly / $62,982.40 – $76,564.80 Annually

Examples of Duties

  • Enforces various federal, state and district laws, rules and regulations regarding air quality; Monitors, inspects, investigates and evaluates industrial and commercial sources of potential or existing air pollution contaminants.
  • Prepares and updates engineering evaluations for Authority to Construct (ATCs) and Permits to Operate (PTOs) and issues permits.
  • Evaluates submitted source test protocols and observes field source testing; analyzes data and calculates source emissions from comprehensive test results.
  • Investigates complaints of potential violations; issues violation notices, warnings, or takes other corrective action as appropriate.
  • Assembles evidence and prepares cases against code violators; provides court testimony, as required.

Education, Experience & Licenses

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, or a related field. 

Air Pollution Control Specialist I: One (1) to two (2) years experience in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, or a related field.  

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Air Pollution Control Specialist IITwo (2) to three (3) years experience in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, or a related field with at least one (1) of that being with a County Air Pollution Control Program.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

License & Special Requirements:

  • Requires state certification as a visible emissions evaluator within one (1) year of employment
  • Requires a valid California driver’s license

Recruitment Information

The department is currently recruiting for one (1) anticipated vacancy.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for an Air Pollution Control Specialist I/II, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.

New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
