Due to the continued heat wave and related energy shortages, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an emergency proclamation that will allow the use of backup generators and other alternate backup power sources to reduce the strain on California’s electrical grid during peak times of the energy emergency. The proclamation, which remains in effect until midnight Thursday, August 20, can be found here.

The Governor also signed an additional order that allows power plants to increase energy production to assist with current needs. Permitted facilities are asked to notify the Tehama County Air Pollution Control District, as well as the California Air Resources Board and the California Energy Commission, within 48 hours if their operations will result in exceedance of permit requirements. To notify the Tehama County Air Pollution Control District of any permit exceedances, please send an email to jdawson@tehcoapcd.net.

The Tehama County Air Pollution Control District encourages businesses and individuals alike to do their part in reducing energy use, this can include:

  • Set thermostats to 78° or higher between 3 and 10 p.m.
  • Refrain from using major appliances between 3 and 10 p.m.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and use energy efficient lamps when needed.
  • Keep windows and doors closed to prevent the loss of cooled air.
  • Charge electric cars after 9 p.m.
